Nashville is the capital of the state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County. Nashville is located on the Cumberland River in Davidson County, in the north-central part of the state. Nashville lies on the Cumberland River in the northwestern portion of the Nashville Basin. Nashville was founded by James Robertson, John Donelson, and a party of Wataugans in 1779. In 1806, Nashville was incorporated as a city and became the county seat of Davidson County, Tennessee. In 1843, the city was named the permanent capital of the state of Tennessee.

Nashville is a center for the health care, music, publishing, banking and transportation industries, and is home to a large number of colleges and universities.

The downtown area of Nashville features a diverse range of entertainment, dining, cultural and architectural attractions. Nashville’s Broadway and 2nd Avenue areas feature entertainment venues, bars, night clubs and a wide range of restaurants. Located in the North of Broadway is Nashville's central business district, Legislative Plaza, Capitol Hill and the well known Tennessee Bicentennial Mall.

Nashville is also known to be an important musical city, especially for country music. Many popular tourist sites of Nashville involve country music, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Belcourt Theatre, and Ryman Auditorium. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is the major performing arts center of the city. It is the home of the Tennessee Repertory Theatre, the Nashville Opera, and Nashville Ballet. Many great artists have called Nashville their home.
