Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth-most-populous and the fourth-largest urban area in the U.S. Philadelphia is stretched between the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, just across from Camden, New Jersey.
Philadelphia was founded by William Penn in 1682. William Penn planned his city as a logical, easily accessible grid, though the prevalence of one-way streets can cause a migraine behind the wheel. Benjamin Franklin, the ingenious American politician and inventor laid the foundations for the metropolis that Philadelphia is today. Benjamin Franklin almost single-handedly built Philadelphia into an American colonial capital; his influence is present in the city’s museums and landmarks, and his name graces a park, a highway, and a bridge, among many other prominent features.
Philadelphia is often called Philly and The City of Brotherly Love, from the literal meaning of the city's name in Greek.
A commercial, educational, and cultural center, Philadelphia was once the second-largest city in the British Empire, and the social and geographical center of the 13 original American colonies. Philadelphia was a centerpiece of early American history and host to many of the ideas, actions and events that gave birth to the American Revolution and independence. Philadelphia was one of the U.S's many capitals during the Revolutionary War and after. After the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, the Philadelphia served as the temporary national capital from 1790 to 1800 while Washington, D.C., was under construction.
The city’s most important sights are located and preserved in Downtown's picturesque Independence National Historical Park. They include: the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776), and the Constitution Center (honoring the US Constitution).
Philadelphia‘s historic attractions, world-class museums, architectural features, cheesesteaks and culinary choices attract millions of visitors every year.
