Smart Lipo is a non-invasive fat removal procedure which uses the focused power of laser energy to break up and dissolve fatty tissue trapped beneath the skin. By directing the energy to the area beneath the surface of the skin, the Smart Lipo technique also encourages the development of collagen, which results in a tighter, more toned appearance overall.

The technique is especially popular because it requires no incisions or general anesthesia, and therefore offers a quick recovery time. SmartLipo also helps treat localized pockets of fat which cannot be effectively treated with traditional liposuction techniques.

Smart Lipo's Wavelength and Power

The Smartlipo™ system has a 1064 nm Nd:YAD laser, which improves skin tone. Also, Smart Lipo acts on collagen fibers, concentrates on blood vessels and fat cells, and slowly heats the skin, making it Smart Lipo a safe option for patients.

There are three Smart Lipo machine models with varying power, including 6, 12, and 18 watts, so that doctors can choose the Smart Lipo model that best fits their practice. Higher wattage Smart Lipo models allow greater patient throughput, and the lower wattage models are less expense and upgradable. pulse durations vary between the different models, with 150, 200, and 250 µ pulse durations, respectively.

Smart Lipo's FDA Approval

The Smartlipo&$trade; laser is approved by the FDA. Smart Lipo was the first laser to be approved by the FDA to be used for fat dissolution and removal with tumescent liposuction. Smart Lipo was introduced in 2007.
 

The Smart Lipo Procedure

Prior to beginning Smart Lipo, the areas to be treated will be carefully marked and a local anesthetic will be given to numb the area. Using a small, handheld device, the Smart Lipo laser energy is directed toward the fat cells beneath the skins surface. As the Smart Lipo laser energy is fired, the fat cells break apart and liquefy. During the initial days following the Smart Lipo procedure, the liquefied fat will be drained away by the body's natural processes. The Smart Lipo laser energy also encourages the growth of new collagen, which tightens skin and improves the overall appearance of the treated area. The Smart Lipo laser energy also helps seal small blood vessels, reducing bleeding and subsequent swelling in the treatment area.

Benefits of Smart Lipo

Smart Lipo's laser technology utilizes a 1064 wave length that targets red blood cells and thus results in less blood loss. In addition, Smart Lipo produces a burst of energy as it enters the fatty tissue that dissolves the fat so it can be removed by suctioning. This improves the safety of the procedure by being able to melt the fat without heating the tissue excessively. Smaller areas of melted fat can actually reabsorb into the body and may not even need suctioning for optimal results.

Smart Lipo's Delivery Mechanism

The Smartlipo™ workstation uses a 300 µm fiber. Smart Lipo is also configurable for use with the SmartSense™ system by Cynosure. SmartSense™ is an intelligent handpiece delivery system that distributes precise energy. For example, if the handpiece stops moving, the laser stops firing within 0.2 seconds and resumes firing when the handpiece begins to move again. The Smartlipo™ workstation does not require the use of the SmartSense™ handpiece.
